Study: MSG Will Make You Fat

by jamie on January 19, 2009

Here’s another reason to eat natural foods (if you really need one) - MSG makes you a fat ass.

A recent study published in Obesity found that MSG, a popular food additive found in commercially prepared and packaged foods has been shown to cause weight gain and obesity in animals by damaging the brain’s appetite regulation center meaning you don’t know that you are full and you keep eating and eating and eating. And for big food corporations, you getting fatter means their wallet is getting fatter - they just love MSG - not only does it make you crave more of what they’re selling but its also a really cheap way to make their cheap ingredients taste good. And the FDA’s rules about listing MSG are pretty loosey goosey (shocking!) meaning food companies can list in ways that consumers are likely not to recognize: hydrolyzed vegetable protein, autolyzed vegetable protein, textured vegetable protein, hydrolyzed yeast extract, autolyzed yeast extract, plant protein extract, sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, yeast extract, textured whey protein, and textured soy protein. It can even come in something as simple and familiar as spice and natural flavor! WTF!

I have an MSG shaker. Straight up MSG tastes like Doritos. No joke. That's why it's so hard to not polish off the entire bag once you open it!

hm - there is a lot of msg in asian cooking (is this too much of a blanket statement? hee), but the rise of obesity in asian countries is being blamed on “western” foods interesting … but as much as i try to strip msg from my own diet, it does make food tasty! and to think - it comes from seaweed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate.
