10 Foods to Health up Your Superbowl Party

by jamie on January 27, 2009

My favorite thing about the Superbowl is the party that comes with it and the occasional half-time show (especially when there’s a costume malfunction or something else gossip worthy).  If you’re thinking about what to serve up for your Superbowl XLIII party this weekend as you watch the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Arizona Cardinals, and are dreading blowing your whole healthy diet during the course of one Sunday afternoon, here are ten healthy Superbowl snack alternatives that your guests will never suspect are good for them:

1. Instead of a big bowl of greasy potato chips, try Buffalo Nickel Wingers, a unique potato wing snack that comes in No Bull Barbecue, Honey Mustard Horsepower, Nacho Chilichanga, Caribbean Zing, and Fiery Buffalo Bleu.  Wingers have all the fun of potato chips without all the fat, salt and artificial flavors.  They’re all natural, low-fat, trans fat and gmo-free as well as meatless and kosher.

2. Serve Corazonas Heart-Healthy Tortilla Chips with Mrs. Renfro’s Roasted Salsa. Corazonas whole grain tortilla chips contain 18 grams of whole grains, three grams of fiber and are gluten free.  Plus, they taste just like the real thing - or better! They come in six delectable flavors including: Original, Jalapeno Jack, Salsa Picante, Margarita Lime, Cilantro Salsa Fresca and Baja Bean Dip (my absolute favorite flavor!). They also have a line of heart healthy potato chips in a variety of fun flavors.  Find them here. Healty SUperbowl hot chick

3. Morning Star Chik’n Nuggets or Buffalo Wings Veggie Wings with Wholemato Spicy Organic Agave Ketchup (they also have original if you’re not into spicy). The nuggets and wings almost taste like the real thing but without the high fat content. And if you’ve never had Wholemato ketchup, I suggest you try it!  Not only is it the most delicious ketchup I have ever tasted, it also forgoes the high-fructose corn syrup, using Agave nectar to preserve sweetness, and contains only eight ingredients (all of which you can pronounce).

4. For a fun appetizer or a sweet treat, try the Fillo Factory Spinach & Cheese Fillo appetizers or the Fillo Factory Brie & Raspberry Rolls. They’re vegetarian, kosher certified, and certified organic. They’re also perfectly flaky, delicious and cheesy- none of your guests will ever suspect they’re eating healthy.

5. Instead of those plastic wrapped veggie platters that come doused in ranch dressing and taste like starch, try Homemade Gourmet Spiced Orange Carrots. They’re super easy to make, healthy and really tasty! All you need is  2 tbsps Homemade Gourmet Spiced Dip Mix, 1 package of frozen carrots, 1 cup of orange juice (preferably organic) 1 tbsp unsalted butter and you’ve got yourself a veggie spread no one will forget.

6. For a healthier sugar rush during half-time, try Newman’s Organics cookies - the Hermits, Newman’s O’s and Fig Newman’s are all really good and will satisfy even the most discriminating taste buds.  Bryan’s favorite are the chocolate Newman’s O’s and mine would have to be the original Hermits.

7.  Substitute that boring bowl of peanuts for some Sahale Snacks.  They satisfy the crunchy & salty or sweet craving in a healthy and delicous way.  Craving sweets?  Try Valdosta pecans made with black pepper, pecans and sweet cranberries or Soledad Almonds which feature almonds, apples, and flax seeds and a hint of date, balsamic and cayenne.  Salty? Try Ksar Pistachios (my favorite), a blend of pistachios, pepitas, figs, honey and a little Moroccan spice or the Sing Buri Cashews which are a blend of lemongrass, soy-glazed cashews, pineapple, peanuts, and sesame seeds with little Chinese chili to top them off.

8. For a gourmet and healthful spin on popcorn, you really have to try Charlie’s Truffled Popcorn (it goes really well with a glass of wine).  Charlie’s Truffled popcorn starts out with plain popcorn and then is made magic with sprinkles of real summer and winter truffles (which retail for about $1,500 per pound). But don’t worry, this amazing gourmet delight won’t break the bank- Charlie’s Truffled Popcorn is only about $8.

9. Try California Lavash Pizza for a lighter and leaner spin on your favorite party food (only 4 grams of fat per half sheet!). Lavash California pizzas use high-quality, natural ingredients to create pizzas that are not only delicious but also healthy. They contain wheat flour, olive oil, sea salt and garlic powder - ingredients you can read and pizza you can guiltlessly enjoy.

10. And lastly, whats a Superbowl party without meatballs? If you’re vegetarian or looking to trim the fat, try Nate’s Zesty Italian Meatless Meatballs. They’re so good, no one will ever suspect they are made of mushrooms, are 100% vegan, and contain no perservatives, artificial flavors, colors, or MSG.

Corazonas are my new fav! The tortilla style ones are so awesome, they're light and don't give you that “I just ate greasy fried carbs” feeling. They even have whole oats in them that you can see in the chip. Two big foam thumbs wayyy up.
