Book Review: Skinny Bitch

skinny bitchI recently read the overly hyped vegan diet manifesto, “Skinny Bitch” by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. Overall, I thought the book was highly entertaining. It contains a lot of important information about the dangers of eating refined or processed foods and tells women in a casual (although demeaning) tone how to whip their lives and health into shape. While I appreciate the somewhat raunchy language, I’m not sure this is the diet book you want to buy for mom or grandma. I mean, it has a whole and very descriptive chapter dedicated to pooping. While I appreciate two hot models telling people why they should poop and how often, I’m not sure everyone would be as tickled by this.

While I agree with the overall philosophy of the book which implies that you should eat plants and try to avoid everything else, I find it a little contradictory that they have a whole chapter called “Let’s Eat” listing their accepted processed food brands - everything from breakfast foods to acceptable snacks and desserts. One chapter they’re telling you all you should ever eat for breakfast is fruit - that you should eat one piece and wait a few minutes and then if you’re still hungry eat another piece and continue on with fruit until you’re satiated. And then they give you suggested menus and acceptable vegan breakfast food products.

My other real issue with the book is that its viewed as a diet book when in reality its a healthy vegan diet and lifestyle book. These two models were never “fat” so what do they really know about losing weight? They only know that to maintain their already skinny frames they should eat only fresh vegetables and exercise daily. Ok - but if you’re already a “fat pig” as the book would say, how would you go from one extreme (your bad diet) to the other extreme (the perfect diet?). Bitch please.

I don’t recommend this book for people who seriously need weight loss help but if you’re already pretty healthy and want to scare yourself shitless and cut refined foods out of your diet forever, this may be the book for you.
