Eating Out San Francisco: Capannina

by Jamie Walker on February 17, 2009

For Valentine’s Day, Bryan took me out for a very romantic dinner at a cute little Italian restaurant tucked away on Union St called Capannina.  It had everything from Italian accents to romantic decor to make for a great date night.

Our first order of business was navigating through their pretty impressive wine list - they had everything from Tuscan Brunellos and Sangiovese to Abruzzo Barolo.  We went with a bottle of Sangiovese, Vigna Baldo - delicious! Next on the list was appetizers which proved be a little limited for vegetarians.  We had the beet salad (surprise, surprise) which was golden and red beets cut into little squares with candied walnuts and goat cheese and the mozarella di bufala without the prosciutto.  Both were delicious.  I especially loved the artichokes in the mozeralla di bufala plate although I’m not sure if those were an addition since we weren’t having the prosciutto or if the dish always comes that way.  For the main course, our choices were extremely limited.  The only real vegetarian option on the menu was the gnocchi which came with a gorgonzola cream sauce, asparagus, and toasted pinenuts.  Luckily, it was really tasty.  We finished off our meal with a little Tawny and then wrote our names in hearts in the bathroom (yes, there is a chalkboard in the bathroom ready for all your drunken [but cute] scribblings).

All in all, I’d say this little Italian gem tucked away in the Marina is worth a try - I only wish they had a few more vegetarian entrees so I’d have an excuse to go back and try something different!
