Don’t Let Your Perishables Perish Too Quickly

On Good Morning America this morning, food editor, Sarah Moulton did a segment on how to save more money on groceries by storing your food properly.  In order to keep your perishables from perishing too quickly, here are a few tips that she shared: Fruits and Veggies

What should live on your refrigerator door?

  • Even if there’s a  handy egg tray on your refrigerator door, don’t store them on it!  Its not only the warmest part of the fridge but eggs will last longer in their original cardboard carton.
  • Same for butter - ditch the  butter tray and go for a cooler part of the fridge
  • Use your refrigerator door for condiments and condiments alone

What about the drawers?

  • If you eat meat, it should go in resealable bags and stuck in one of the drawers
  • Most of your fruits & veggies should also go in the crisper.  But, they should be separated!  Some fruits like apples give off gases that will actually harm your other fruits and veggies and shorten their lifespan.

What fruits & veggies do not belong in your fridge?

  • Potatoes, onions, garlic and tomatoes (unless you’ve cut them)
  • Avocados & bananas — if your bananas are getting overripe, freeze them!  Let your avocado ripen on the counter but once it gets too ripe, that’s when you want to stick in the cooler.
