Thirsty for Soda?

by jamie on March 10, 2009

If you’re thinking of grabbing an ice cold Diet Coke, Mountain Dew or Dr. Pepper, think again.  Thanks to TreeHugger, I now have one more reason to avoid soda at all costs- When you drink soda, you’re also drinking BPA, or  bisephenol A.   YUCK!

Soda popBPA is known as a “gender bender” because it disrupts the body’s natural hormone balance.  It is a synthetic compound but is viewed by the body as estrogen.  Exposure to extremely low levels of the compound has caused hormonally linked diseases such as breast cancer in animal experiments.  It is used in the can liners and can leech into the soda inside.

I used to be a Diet Coke drinker and an ocassional Diet Dr. Pepper drinker (especially when nursing a hangover!) but now I stick to water, tea and coffee.  I went cold turkey on soda about 6 months ago and am still going strong.  I’ll admit, I have had cravings, especially after a long night of drinking but thanks to TreeHugger’s post yesterday, I have one more reason not to drink that bubbly hangover curing magic in a can.

If you miss drinking soda you can easily make your own without BPA, see http://sodaclub.com/ and http://sodaclub.com/node/59

This is all the more reason that you should just buy the larger 20 ounce bottles and drink those instead. Guess this also means just sticking to bottled beer.
