When I want candy, I usually crave the sugary, gummy varieties. Unfortunately, as my super strict vegetarian boyfriend likes to point out, most of the gummy candies I crave contain gelatin which he won’t eat. That’s why I was so thrilled to discover Surf Sweets, a local Santa Cruz company that is committed to providing healthier alternatives in the candy world by creating products that are free of allergens, corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, and often use real sugar. Plus, many of their candies are vegetarian (meaning no gelatin)!
I absolutely love the Surf Sweets sour worms - the flavor is not overly sweet nor sour giving a perfect blend of citrus flavorings. I could definitely see myself carrying a baggie of these during my next ultra marathon. They would give me that perfect little sugar boost without simultaneously putting all the crap that comes in regular gummy candies into my body.
Unfortunately, unlike their sour counter-parts, these are not vegetarian worms. However, if you’re not concerned with gelatin products, these little guys look and feel like regular gummy worms. The flavor in these worms is a little more subtle and hard to distinguish.
The fruity bears are gummy bears coated in sugar. When I first opened the bag, I thought they would be similar in taste to the super sour gummy worms because of their appearance. But, they’re more like gumdrops than a gummy bear and while they have a very fresh and rich fruity smell, they definitely were a bit to mild for me. While the flavor was a bit too muted for me, these are still good and a perfect option for vegetarians.
Let me start by saying, I have never been a big jelly bean person. That being said, these are pretty good. They come in pastel colors and have a strong resemblance to the flavors in the Fruity Bears. The outside shell is really firm while the inside is chewy (like gum) and even a little chalky. These are suited for vegetarians and jelly bean lovers.
