Like most people, you probably woke up this morning thinking of ways to recycle, reduce and reuse in honor of Mother Nature’s favorite holiday. Maybe you even biked to work and gave yourself a victory pat on the back for saving gas and the Earth for the first time in 364 days. Maybe you switched from your usual water bottle to a Klean Kanteen. Or maybe, you simply posted your favorite Earth Day tip or favorite green product on Facebook and Twitter. If you did one or all of these things, congratulations, look how”earthy friendly” you really are.
And while I do think its great to get down and earthy with your bad self, I’m beginning to think Earth Day is just as bad as Valentine’s Day. We encourage people one day out of every year to show Mother Nature some love. Why not every day? If you’ve already had a few Earth faux pas this week - maybe you littered a gum wrapper, drove around the corner because you were too lazy to walk, took an hour long shower so you could “think” or even fell asleep with your TV on - will this one glorious day of Earth lovin be enough for redemption?
Who knows? Maybe I’m just being cynical or maybe I’m just guilty because I personally didn’t do anything in honor of Earth Day. Instead of my usual bike (sometimes bus) commute, I actually drove to work this morning. I bought bottled sparkling water to go with lunch. And, I plan to watch an extra hour of TV when I get home tonight.
What did you do for Earth Day?
