Eating Out San Francisco: Alive Restaurant

by jamie on May 7, 2009

Last night, I enjoyed a nice little dinner date with Bryan.  He took me to Alive, a vegan and raw food restaurant in San Francisco.  Almost everything on the menu sounded incredible; if Bryan hadn’t been there, I would’ve ordered everything.  I guess it just means I’ll have to go back.

Shiitake Mushroom Miso Soup with Yams ($10): If you like miso, you will love this soup.  It might have been the freshest miso broth I’ve ever tasted.  And the yams and shiitakes were so flavorful, I never wanted the bowl to empty. IMG_1911

Flaxseed Flatbread with Cashew Cream, Tomatoes, and Avocado ($12): I am a flaxseed addict and these little flaxseed flatbreads are the perfect starter to any meal.  The cashew cream is a perfect consistency and give the tomatoes and avocados a little extra umph!  I could have eaten the whole thing; its the kind of appetizer you order to share and then wish you hadn’t.

King Trumpet Mushrooms, Capers, and Mendocino Sea Palms with Almond Cream Sauce ($20): This dish reminded me of a cross between a salad and coleslaw: not too juicy and not too dry.  The mushrooms were unbelievably flavorful and fresh and the blend of almond cream, sea palms, and capers gave it that savory and sweet flavor that will cause you to lick the plate clean. Thyme-Parsley Walnut Pesto Raviolis with Shiitake Mushrooms ($16): When I think of ravioli, the word light rarely comes to mind.  That’s why I love the ravioli at Alive.  They are light and fresh and have just the right amount of sauce.  You can really taste the shiitakes and the parsley gives it a great kick.

Candy Cap Mushroom Cheesecake with Berry Drizzle: I have two words for this: SIMPLY AMAZING! Seriously, who knew that cheeseless cheesecake would be so delicious!

The other great thing about Alive is that they offer classes on preparing raw food.  I’m going to take one on May 17th.  Who’s with me?

Wow. those pictures are beautiful, and the combination of flavors sound really interesting. I love meat and I’d even give this place a try!
