We Just Keep Getting Fatter…

by jamie on July 8, 2009

Its sad but true, we’re just getting fatter.  In fact, the CDC recently reported that more than 26% of Americans are now clinically obese.

You would think that a society so focused on image would be slimming down - but while our celebrities and even diets shed calories, we just keep getting heavier.  It leads me to think that part of the obesity problem is that we focus too much on being “skinny” and not enough on being healthy.  We not only try to make our bodies skinny but now we even strip the fat out of our foods.  If our food continues to down the path of “non-fat,” “enriched,” “fortified,” or “calorie-free,” something tells me Americans will continue to be “fat,” “obese,” “heavy,” and “big-boned.”

If we’re ever going to stop the obesity scales from climbing, we’re going to have to readjust our attitudes toward food and “diet.” We can’t continue to modify foods just so that we have an excuse to eat more.  How many times have you heard yourself say, “but, its fat-free,” or “its fortified with calcium.”  Even if a cookie is fat-free and fortified with potassium, it still isn’t a banana.
