Eating My Way Through Nicaragua & Costa Rica

by jamie on August 31, 2009

I know many of you have suffered mild anxiety, sleeplessness, or even diarrhea over the last couple of weeks as you obsessed about where I might be and when I would write next [wishful thinking].  But, fear not.  I didn’t go anywhere — well, not for good anyway - I’ve just returned from my much needed vacation which I spent cruising down the Pacific coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

And lucky for you, I ate lots of food (and, I mean LOTS) and took some drool worthy pictures to share with you all.

Here’s part one of the food journey (part two will come when I’ve been able to upload the rest of my massive photo collection):

Healthy granola (or rather muesli with raisins and nuts) combined with fruit and yogurt (lots of pineapple and papaya hidden underneath –Amor Del Mar, Montezuma, Costa Rica.

Juevos! Amazing veggie eggs — with tomatoes, jalapenos, and peppers.  Fresh avocado and my absolute favorite part — plaintains! Sueno del Mar, Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Fresh coconut - no beach vacation is complete without cracking open a coconut, eating the flesh and drinking the juice! See the coconut cracker himself above. :)

Just give me some damn coffee!  I hadn’t had a cup in months before we set foot in Costa Rica.  It just smelled too damn good!

Becuase all good meals should start and end with a stiff drink — Tropicales and Rum, Nuevo Arenal, Costa Rica.

*This was a funny story - after a long day of travelling, we arrived in this small town outside of Nuevo Arenal, not exactly where we thought we were going.    It was literally a ghost town.  There was not a single person at our hotel and nothing close by — we knew dinner would be a challenge and I was starving.  After a walk down a pitch black windy road lit only by Bryan’s small flashlight, and a ride from the Costa Rican Polizia, we ended up at this small local restaurant.  In Bryan’s broken Spanish he tried to tell them I wanted a “girly” drink which resulted in this, Tropicales and rum.  Not a bad choice!
